In 1811 the street was called Himnazskoyu, because it was open commercial gymnasium Volseya. At the beginning of the XIX century commercial gymnasium became Rishel'yevskym lyceum, but the street is still traditionally termed Himnazskoyu and only 6 July 1811 it was renamed in honor of Joseph de Ribas on Deribassovskaya.
Brave captain, twice wounded in the battles of Ishmael, losing his right hand, he was about three years mayor of Odessa. Perhaps his name not be rooted in the memory of posterity, if not stay in Odessa to live permanently, his brother Felix de Ribas.
