Ivano-Frankivsk region was formed by the joining of Galicia to the USSR, December 4, 1939. In 1962, it was named Stanislav region. In the south, Ivano-Frankivsk region within 50 km border with Romania. The area of the region is 13.9 thousand km ². The largest populous cities in the region are Ivano-Frankivsk, Kalush, Coloma.
The largest rivers of the region are the Dniester and Prut.
